Sharky’s Machine was intended to be the reunion of Burt Reynolds and John Boorman. Their previous engagement was Deliverance. Boorman was coming off Excalibur which had pretty much drained him and suggested Reynolds do it himself. Burt was drain to the film because it reminded him of his all time favorite film, Laura.

Sharky's Machine finds Burt Reynolds as a narcotics cop who after a failed buy and bust that wasn't his fault, but that got a few people killed in it, he finds himself demoted to the vice squad in Atlanta. The prestige is hardly as good as the narcotics beat, but it does have its fringe benefits.

If you are a fan of Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry, then you'll likely be at home with Sharky's Machine that focuses on a detective named Sharky who is quick to forgo police procedures and pump some well-deserved lead into criminals. The story is set in 1975 Atlanta, with short sections set in 1944 Italy and 1959 Hong Kong that eventually tie into the main story.

A William Diehl novel was the source of the noirish nailbiter Sharky's Machine. Sharky (Burt Reynolds) is an undercover cop who fouls up an assignment and is kicked downstairs to the vice squad -- a rough-shod bunch of hellraisers who make life miserable.

Sleek, moody, violent and romantic, Sharky's Machine is not only the most seductive Burt Reynolds movie in many a moon. Reynolds is turning into a stylish director, and he sets a distinctive tone of languid menace. Though he can be graphically brutal, Reynolds isn't after realism, but a kind of gauzy, slightly baroque romanticism.
